Statement on the Registration of Voters

Press Release

August 22, 2025

The Constitution of Kenya under Article 88(4)(a) requires the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC) to conduct continuous voter registration.

Yet, since 2022, the IEBC has suspended this process giving frivolous excuses while blatantly violating the Constitution and disenfranchising millions of youth who have attained the age of 18.

The Commission cannot continue picking and choosing which of its constitutional duties to undertake based on political patronage. While IEBC has refused to conduct voter registration for years, it over-enthusiastically cleared the nomination of the current Deputy President when he was selected as DP. Similarly, IEBC continues to frustrate genuine efforts by Kenyans to recall their Members of Parliament as provided for in the law.

We demand that the IEBC immediately commences the continuous voter registration process and conducts a mass voter registration campaign. The Registrar of persons must facilitate the issuance of national identification cards to all the youth who have attained the age of 18.

I call on the youth to ensure that you have your national ID and register to vote. Your power is in your ID and your vote.
